Fem Bodiment A Success!

For years I have thought of an event like Fem Bodiment - a soiree of our collective work and aspirations. The evening was decorated with music by Radio Rose and opera performance by Pavlina HoraKova, belly and salsa dance performances, and of course a display of our inspirations... our shoes! A little something for everyone to have a memorable time. The best part for me was the launch of Free Your Star Foundation, to be able to award our first scholarship winner will be a moment I will never forget.

This chic evening was dedicated to raising money for another scholarship for spring 2012 semester...it is with great pleasure that I share we met 75% of our goal and will be able to offer a $1200 scholarship! Every year Fem Bodiment will be celebrated, so no worries if you missed it this time. Enjoy more pictures below.

Gina Valenti, California native and the creative eye (photographer) behind this shoot is in her senior year at Brook's College. Gina decided on New York for her first real-world steps, just 6 days fresh to Brooklyn we had the opportunity to create together. My daily armor mixed with her love for fashion photography.

Supporting creative minds like Gina and young minds I work with through Freedom Star Mentorship gives meaning to all my work. And so, I freely style fun floral kicks by Irregular Choice with satin cocktail dresses in the middle of the day for creation-sake. What can I say, life is good.

"Do you" or "I'm doin' me"

is a very New York (perhaps East coast) saying. When talking to friends in the South, Midwest or even West coast the same message is still there, just translated into a longer description.

Taking time to be selfish, nurturing who you are outside of your career, relationship and even family is (in my opinion) a must. This outift is a total "Doin' me" situation. It was a late night in 2008 creating new looks from old n' new pieces when I styled this look, except for the amazing Boutique 9 shoes that introduced themselves to me this summer.

Not sure what took me so long to bust it out (well, the mid-drift thing was not so popular before recently, and I had no island vacations planned as an excuse to show my bare waist) but I'm glad this summer it has made its debut.

Grey vest from H&M (fall 2008) served as the perfect mid drift top to show off above my belly button - hiked up pink pleated skirt I found in Good Will Downtown Denver back in 2005.

Made sure my skirst stayed in place thanks to a silver twisted-chain belt from a boutique tour in L.E.S. and, of course, no outfit of mine is complete without a touch of Freedom...

paired with a fox ring from Xing accessories in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

My goodness it is H-O-T, I'm not sure those three simple letters justify the hot spell New Yorkers are trying to survive.

When getting dressed this week my fashion goals were pretty simple, what's the lightest most breathable dress I own, that I can still conduct meetings in, and, last but not least, doesn't show any sweat marks! (ewww, I know, but a reality for any MTA commuter). I opted for this poly/cotton dress by Tramp, maybe not the most breathable fabric, but great cut-out in the back and a loose yet flattering silhouette didn't hold onto the heat like some long-lost-lover.

As much as I love this butterfly fabric, I didn't wake up feeling ultra girlie - easy fix to that & my favorite trend popping up everywhere - spikes n' studs... combined two black leather studded belts for a more dramatic look around my waist, paired with fun purple studded heels from True Love boutique in Denver.

Finished the look with purple feather earrings by Freedom Star and a vintage white-sequin purse (square sequince have a stud feel, help tie it all together....it's the small things, giggle) from ReDress in Cobble Hill.

Once a dancer, always a dancer.

Dance is mi primer amor. My first love.

As soon as I saw this skirt (Twelve by Forever21) it took me back to my days dancing at Colorado Ballet. I've since traded my toe-shoes for something a little sexsier... salsa, tango and the occasional cha-cha. There is just something about sliding on a pair of heels that makes life from sidewalk to dance floor feel a little more sultry. These 4 inch ROCK & REPUBLIC steel heels are a perfect example,

Mm mmm mm.

Added a touch of bold fun with Freedom Star Accessories double sequince multi-chain necklace paired with a double finger ring from a boutique tour in Fort Greene. Topped it off with an American Apparel leotard (which can quickly double as a sunning suit if you happen to find yourself close to a beach or Central Park).

Lifes' circumstances have me feeling tough around the edges - I need my fashion armor more than ever to pick up my spirits and protect my passions. What better way to do that than with my gold studded ROCK & REPUBLIC heels.
I just feel fierce slipping them on!

No matter the mood, as many professionals know, you still have a face to put on and business to conduct. To keep it professional and carry all my meeting necessities (journal, proposals, even my iPAD fit in here!) I opted for my black leather Buffalo Exchange box purse.

To help keep a smile on my face I went straight for my Fashion Denver find -- a ring from The Hot Pink Mustache (always a great impromptu photo prop)!

Now that work is all done, it's time to play, kept it cool (literally and figuratively) with harem pants from Forever 21 and sequince and mesh tube top from Arden B. Off to meet the girls for a little creation celebration!

One of the things about living in New York (for most of us) is that you-are-one with the elements. What do I mean? There is no car, garage, or covered walkway to spare you from the wind, rain or snow. So, what does that mean for someone like me who gets dressed from bottom - up? Cover those toes...and that, was the inspiration for this week's outfit.

It is still spring however (and I would like to show off the tan I'm rockin' from

last weekend), so I kept the colors light in this Alice Moon dress found on a rack in Park Slope. Added a spot of cute with Calvin Klein polka-dot pantyhose, paired with one of my favorite brands Miz Mooz (oh so comfy heels, made for City girls).

No outfit, or day for that matter, is complete without a dose of Freedom - Omid (hope) leaf drop earrings, this pair in a shade of olive, also available in purple. Finished off the look with a tuxedo jacket ($3 find in Jackson Heights! Sorry BAM boutique is closed now) embellished with large silk flower from H&M, and an absolute favorite accessory of mine...

A year ago today Freedom Star Mentorship along with 7 bright minds (14-17 years old), hosted Freedom through Fashion, a benefit concert and fashion show.

For nearly four months, this group of 7 students had to maintain the responsibilities of their specific positions, whether Stylist, Talent Coordinator, Producer, Social Media Manager or Event Planner, each student had areas they were responsible for.

More than half of our group represented the first graduating class of Frances Perkins Academy, with that in mind, Angela, Celeta, Kyle, Javier, Jelani, Christian and Shakeiy'a decided the proceeds of the show would go back to their school! I'm delighted to announce we met our goal and C.A.D. software was obtained for the student body of FPA.

Freedom through Fashion brought together emerging designers and artists including Under Ground System Afro Beat, People In Gear, a special dance session opening with none-other than Benny Ninja from America's Next Top Model!

It is a joy to look back at how much we conquered last year - Freedom Star Mentorship has only begun empowering - I am excited to see what we triumph over in the next decade!

Love holiday weekends, a time to slow down, catch up with friends,

and always a great excuse to dress to the 9's.

The warm weather inspired my skirt to get shorter-and-shorter as my heels got taller-and-taller. These 5 inch ROCK & REPUBLIC platforms are much more comfortable than they appear...even on the cobble stone streets of the French Quarter a.k.a. 4-wheeling for high heels - that's when they were really put to the test, and I'm happy to share no blisters or broken ankles.

Found this Victoria Bekham influenced dress roaming through the Fashion District - I think on 7th Ave and 37th Street - - but the little shop is no longer there. :(

Now that the basics were taken care of it was time to add a little funk.

Kept it dressy and distinctive with a touch of Freedom Star : dark silver, studded bow-tie necklace *.

I knew I wanted to play up the tuxedo theme from my pantyhose (Calvin Klein) that's when I remembered a little treasure I found for $10 at the Young Designer's Market in SOHO - - well hello TOP HAT.

Oh, my heart is smiling so big. :) Couldn't resist adding my newest bejeweled friend Octopus from True Love boutique in Denver.

And, voila my little black dress is holiday-weekend-appropriate!

Radiance NY stops by to talk make up!

Amy Klewitz, friend and long-time supporter of Freedom Star and most importantly the founder of Radiance NY: hair, makeup and dance, stopped by our photo shoot to make sure I had the right look for this outfit. Here is her make up tip for those looking to mix a little warm & cool.

In this look Sahar wears a gorgeous wood linked necklace accompanied by brown and grey tones. This look is great as it combines both warm and cool colors, which gives you more to choose from as of makeup. Despite being dressed for the cool spring weather, this summer you are likely to mix these two colors. Sahar wears a nice warm lip with hints of peach to compliment this look - great for a natural summer glow, I recommend NARS “Warm Rose Brown” matte lip stick with “Wonder” lip gloss to add more peach tones to the mix.

Another place to play up this look is in the cheeks. By running a light eye and neutral lip we can play up the cheeks with warmer colors to bring out those cheekbones. I recommend “Honey Bronzing Powder” by the Body Shop.

In the eight years I've lived in NYC, this has been the coldest spring yet. I won't complain much longer, this weather is a great opportunity to pull out jackets I haven't worn in years...like this beautiful honey-brown hand stitch leather jacket I found at a street fair in the West Village back in'04.

To keep hope for spring alive I paired the jacket with olive linen pants by Twelve (forever21), and BCBG Girls wood and leather platform heels (they are super light and comfy).

No outfit of mine is complete without a little piece of Freedom, wood link necklace with vintage key from Freedom Star Accessories ...the perfect

finishing touch!

It was love-at-first-sight when I found this empire waist lace top at Flavour Boutique on 86th Street in Bayridge Brooklyn. One of my favorite stops for good priced tops and dresses that you can wash and don't fall apart!

Sahar's light pink lace top paired with the soft grays in her hat and jeans inspired me to go for a nice neutral look. By using a soft peach across the lid to bring out the brown in her eyes and a medium line of liquid or cake eyeliner you get the soft but made-up look that complements both aspects of this outfit. I recommend Mac’s “Paint Pots in black or brown. Also by adding a peach cheek you stay on the neutral end but still adding some color highlight to the cheeks and a neutral lip.

...when she said we learned from each other. Freedom Star Mentoring officially launched this month. Last semester Tenae and Chelsea became the first young ladies to experience mentorship and internship through Freedom Star.

Some of our accomplishments included increasing Freedom Star's web presence, planning and executing a very successful Inaugural Unity Ball.

Freedom Star collaboration with Soulseye Productions will have footage of the event featuring Edyta Sliwinska from Dancing With The Stars.

The inspiration of our accomplishments had me thinking bigger and more fashion. Freedom Star Mentorship is now offering Fashion Show Productions Internship Program. Eight to ten high school students will create, plan and put on a fashion show. Proceeds from the event will benefit a cause or program the group decides on collectively. From stylists, event planners, producers to set designers everyone will have something fantastic to contribute. Pictures and video coming soon.

Mentoring is my true passion. I love watching the moment when inspiration is ignited, and a young woman/man realizes the next step to shaping her/his future. It's a process that is quite addicting. Speaking of...

My ambassador duties with Jarluxe have officially begun. On Saturday's I have the opportunity to spend time with the young ladies and gentlemen from Bronx High School of Visual Arts. We spend Saturday morning learning and creating, while preparing these smart and dedicated students to be Fashion's next Executives.

I am a Global Citizen

Global Citizen. Those two words sound so beautiful to me, mostly because of my experience as an immigrant. I've never felt completely at home anywhere since my family uprooted from Iran early in life. Seven years in New York, and the mish-mosh of cultures all forced to live together feels the most welcoming.

Chris Wilson and his wife, Nubia DuVall are the super powers behind the Global Citizen Project. The opening ceremony this past weekend was a surreal experience for me.

Seven immigrants were interviewed by Nubia DuVall, who translated each story into eloquently written pieces that hung below Chris Wilson's remarkable paintings. For my particular portrait we met at a restaurant in Union Square. Lighting inside was too dark for photographs - which is what each portrait Chris paints is based off of. We head outside where he takes a snap shot of me acting silly to get comfortable in front of the camera.

Apparently it only took an hour for Chris to decide on that particular photograph. For me it was an honor to just be able to share my story. I hope it inspires others to reach for their star. For more information see www.paintwilson.com

An Interns Voice...

I chose to share this poem because it speaks loud for people that aren't willing or afraid to speak for themselves. I felt I had to write this poem because I'm always the voice that's listened to in school. So I figured if I wrote this poem I spread awareness to people that make fun of others, because they don't have the latest fashions or because they are gay, whatever the case may be this poem is for you.

Just because I'm not shaped like a classic coca-cola bottle

and my hair isn't long and str8, but instead its hard and nappy,

which makes me BLACK doesn't mean that I'm not gonna be successful.

And just because you nor society accepts me doesn't mean I have to be criticized. Especially not by you, I thought you loved me but instead I feel hatred at times.

And guess what, she's tired, I'm tired, tired of being put down

Tenae's Adventures

Hi I'm Tenae one of the newest interns at Freedom Star from Frances Perkins Academy. During my Tuesday and Thursday adventure to Bay Ridge Brooklyn I have more than enough time to see different things as I go from one place to another. By traveling I have seen the difference between the two places in which they have inspired me to write poetry and create my own piece of jewelry. So far being an intern at Freedom Star has been one of the greatest experiences because my mentor is very cool and supportive. I love working with her because she's not only teaching me but we're teaching each other.

I have learned how to make jewelry which led me to make a charm bracelet for my grandmother. Here is a start to the charm bracelet I'm designing. I picked the link because it looks antique and fits my grandmother's skin tone. The butterfly and the leaf charm are special because it represents my grandmother's love for the out doors and God's creatures.

During my internship I also got to be a guest designer, and re-create a Freedom Star signature look, Baran- which means raindrop in Farsi. Next time you guys hear from me I will have my inspiration poem.

Quiet Force

It's been over a month since I've written. I've thought about it plenty, but those thoughts quickly get replaced with others, the continuous checklist that replays in my mind. Don't get me wrong, no negativity here, just the first time I've sat down in a couple of weeks and digested my work.

It's true what they all say, actors, new start-ups - famed or not, it all just started happening, It went by so fast. And that ladies and gents is exactly what I am in the midst of. I'm here sharing it with you because of a promise, one I made to myself to reflect on the work at hand -learn from it as soon as possible, stand on a new plateau because of it, and gain momentum for the next wave of my dream.

Back in January I picked up the Town and Country on the lobby table of a dance studio - in it was a horoscope article about what 2009 had in store for me, a Libra. The article was quite positive, maybe just what I needed at the time, either way I distinctly remember it stating my career dreams would take off in September and October - and sure enough projects bigger than I ever imagined are unfolding.

A company I work closely with, NY Partner Dance, has asked me to be Project /PR/Marketing manager for their Inaugural Unity Ball. A charity event raising proceeds for two wonderful funds ~ UN 1% for Development Fund and Czech Cultural Center BBLA. Best of all the theme of the night is my first love - dance - multicultural unity through social dancing. It has been a pleasure to work on something from the ground up. To start with a brainstorming session and end with a proposal to the United Nations, a world class venue and contacting celebrity dancers (hopefully Edyta Sliwinska) to attend. www.unityball.info

I have been able to conquer such a task thanks to my two new interns. Tenae, I met her through a high school program called The Bigger Picture. Students get to intern two days a week for school credit - I think it's an amazing program, one I wish I had the opportunity to experience at her age. She has been helping me design my next line heading to Fashion Denver to be showcased for the month of November! So exciting, lots of new funky bold looks to one's that will suit the bohemian medieval princess from neck to waist! She is also going to be blogging soon, so keep an eye out.

I also met Chelsea, an LIM College student who is reaching for her dream OF becoming an event planner. Her position means a lot of leg work and thinking about deocrations for the Unity Ball. I can't wait for her and I to be standing side by side that night - for a brief 15 seconds of course - to take in all the hard work.

Tricks to Fabulosity

I'm always looking for a quick fix to make the same outfit look like a new one.

It's really a personal challenge that I enjoy and have been doing for as long as I can remember. Not to mention my style depends on my mood that morning or a spontaneous event. Last week is a perfect example of spontaneity meets work outfit...my navy straight leg jumper that gave me the Hampton's kind of feeling for a casual work day wasn't funky enough when I was surprised with tickets to Common's Diesel cologne (only the brave) launch party at Capitale. I was more in a harem pants mood - A belt and two pieces of ribbon later my straight leg jumper had the urban feel I wanted. All I did was tie the ribbon at the bottom of each pant leg, I thought about letting the ends hang to add a little surprise to the outfit - but my shoes took care of that - so I tucked them under so only I knew they were there.

Some think my closet is endless...but really its all about the tricks, the mixing-and-matching, and great accessories. Getting creative with what I have to inspire a new look is the best part of my day. Not to mention it really helps in times when you want to stick to your budget.

Summer time is wedding season, and many of my dear friends have been bitten by the love bug. A few days later I was heading to DUMBO for a wedding under the Brooklyn Bridge. I woke up feeling fiercely flirty - my purple poof dress needed a little edge. Belts are always great to transform and add new lines to your outfit...two belts are even better! I had two studded belts that were the right size for my hip, but wanted something rock-n-roll for my waist. I stuck one in the other and voila, a double texture studded belt.

So there it is, my tricks for the week.

Freedom Star meets JarLuxe

The day I wrote my outline for Freedom Star Mentorship is the same day I first heard of Anistia Phiaria. She is CEO of Phiaria International Design Group Inc. and Fashionlanthropist and Creative Director for JarLuxe Foundation.

When I was getting my undergrad Freedom Star was a line of hand made scarves. I knew I wanted it to be more. Benefits of going back to college when you are a bit older include making the most of all your resources. For me this meant becoming Editor-in-Chief of my schools paper - Fashionista. I used this as a platform to poke my head around the fashion industry, as well as, an opportunity to get to know LIM's faculty - all fashion industry professionals.

I learned a lot, and realized mostly that if I had been introduced to the vast career possibilities in fashion sooner in life I would not have jumped from a Chemistry major to a Fashion Marketing major. But, no love lost. Out of this I knew I wanted Freedom Star to serve as that particular channel of communication. Now, you can imagine how elated I was when I first heard about JarLuxe. The philosophy behind this foundation is exactly that. To raise Fashion's next top executives.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to meet Anistia, where my excitement almost ran over my manners. Almost as fast as I told her my name I was offering my help on behalf of myself and as Freedom Star to help and support. I am proud to share that I am now an Ambassador for JarLuxe. First up, scholarship fundraiser September 16th.

The first two scholarship recipients were just chosen, and currently attending LIM College. Congratulations girls!

I feel honored and excited to meet other young woman entrepreneurs taking the lead and most important using their skills to better our future. Thank you JarLuxe and Anistia.

I was making final edits on my web-site between creating new earrings.

Well, I'm happy to report that Afro Punk was a success and .... AT LAST....

www.freedomstaronline.com has spread its wings!

Thanks to a patient and knowledgeable web designer, Sarah. She answered all my questions and dealt with my artist angst. I must say, there is something about looking at your work on the Internet that makes you feel ... legit... is there any better way to say it? After all, it was something that made me take a moment and think about the past year. You know the instance that gives you satisfaction, job well done, sit back, sigh and sink in your chair. That's right before the wave of excitement and motivation hits to see what else you can do! That is where I am tonight.

I felt the same when I was packing up at the end Afro Punk Festival. I must say, Freedom Star came onto the street festival scene on the right note. The vibe of the vendors during set up was one of a tight community. The competition became your admirers and supporters. And that's just the vendors!

The day continues and Afro Punk chic to geek were killing it. Personal style was on point and all over the map. If I wasn't suffering from an emergency root canal I would have taken more pictures. It was a mix of punk meets Nubian princess, while she awaits her rocker prince who will no doubt pick her up on his BMX. Amazing. I felt honored to be there.

Few weeks later my jewelry making took me to the bridal suite of a dear friend - Delphine. I was honored to make the necklace that lay down her back as she married my other good friend, Steve. If this day of love wasn't enough to make a girl grin from ear-to-ear, I was also asked to

be their Officiant.

So, basically that's where I've been...launching my site, surrounded by Nubian princesses, and marrying Cinderella to her prince.

Now time to get ready for September 13th!!! Wondering why? Stay tuned....

Just like my Momma

I dig through my memories of the past, and no matter the occasion, I remember my Mom hosting one of her beautiful (presentation is everything) and delicious dinners, there was this promise of delicious food for days to come. Said (my brother) and I knew there would be days of yummy leftovers.

She was ready to stimulate every taste bud with an array of dishes. Fish, chicken, vegetarian, whatever you had a taste for, my Mom had a dish for it. Getting ready for a market I get in this frame of mind.

Like my Mom, I hope my jewels are tasty to any women, no matter her inspiration for that day's outfit. But, what really makes me see my Momma's ways is how I get crazy with design ideas a few days before. Which means I'm definitely not getting any sleep and making an overload of accessories! But, it's a must - I must create every color combination that comes to mind for whatever earring or necklace I envision as I gaze at my beads and charms.

I wish my camera wasn't broken so I could give you a sneak peak of what I made tonight for Afro Punk Festival...come check it out this weekend. Found a cool antique gold owl charm, and amazing rustic safety pins that make a great addition to the newest Freedom Star necklace.

Freedom Star is really spreading it's wings. Many have told me to start a blog to record my experience building this business and sharing what it takes to really go after a dream. So, here I am.

Hopefully the ride will be fun, with minimal bumps and bruises.

And now off to review the final draft of my web-site. Before staying up all night to get ready for Afro Punk Block Party in Brooklyn this Sunday. It will be Freedom Star Accessories first street fair appearance! I'm so excited and my dear friend Brina will be flying in from Colorado to help out! What would we do without our friends?
